How infrared sends data

This Computing video supports teachers in introducing pupils to the concept of infrared data transmission. It explores the advantages and limitations of using infrared as a way of transferring data invisibly over short distances. The video revisits earlier concepts such as QR codes and contrasts them with infrared technology, showing how data can be sent wirelessly using electromagnetic waves. Teachers are guided through the science behind infrared, including its discovery and adaptation using gallium arsenide, and how infrared diodes can send signals to a receiver.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work – videos. It builds teacher confidence by linking computing with real-world contexts and historical examples, such as remote controls and data transfer. It prepares teachers to explain and demonstrate the use of invisible technology, helping children understand how devices like scanners and remotes communicate. The lesson supports pupils’ development of technical vocabulary and their understanding of how data can be transmitted wirelessly and safely using light-based technologies.
