Exploring how oceans support life on Earth
This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in explaining why oceans are essential to life on Earth. It helps children understand the physical, biological, and economic significance of oceans, including their role in the water cycle, climate regulation, and global trade.
Teachers are guided through how to introduce the five oceans—the Arctic, Southern, Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific—and help pupils locate them and identify countries that trade on a world map. The video explores the ocean’s natural resources, including renewable energy from waves and tides, and non-renewable resources such as oil and minerals. Pupils also learn about the oceans’ biodiversity, with over 2 million species, the importance of coral reefs as storm barriers, and the scale of global fish consumption and the ocean’s importance in helping combat climate change.
Finally, the video introduces how oceans support human activity and employment, such as fishing, mining, tourism, and recreation, helping children understand the many ways we rely on the ocean.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Oceans collection and supports cross-curricular links with sustainability topics.
