Exploring texture and collage
This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in exploring how artists use colour and texture to create collages, using materials they prepare themselves.
The lesson begins by reminding children what collage means. Using examples from the lesson slides, the class will discuss how textures are used in collage and how they might have been created.
Children will paint their own collage papers using techniques and textures they explored in the texture hunt. They’ll use a variety of tools to apply paint in creative ways. Before the lesson, decide whether children will work individually or in groups, and what their collages will show. Ideas could come from sketchbooks or photos taken outdoors. Collages might represent landscapes, zoomed-in textures or even abstract designs. This activity encourages children to experiment with materials, colour and composition, working in ways that suit their own artistic style.
