Understanding chronology in history
In this History video, teachers are introduced to the skills needed to help young children understand chronology by sequencing events in time.
The video demonstrates how to create timelines that span from the children’s daily experiences to family history, changes within living memory and events beyond living memory. Teachers see a range of engaging activities, from sorting artefacts and creating human timelines to using classroom displays and visual prompts to develop time vocabulary and mental timelines. Practical strategies support children in organising the past, recognising patterns of continuity and change, and building a solid foundation for understanding cause and effect, as well as historical connections.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills resources, designed to build teachers’ confidence and skills in supporting the children to sequence events and understand chronology.
