Supporting classes to have ethical AI conversations
This Computing scheme of work video supports teachers in guiding pupils through ethical discussions about Artificial Intelligence. It focuses on helping children explore the moral questions raised by AI and its impact on individuals, communities and society.
The video outlines key ethical themes in the lesson, including surveillance, job loss, privacy and bias. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about how AI affects these areas and why ethical practices are essential in ensuring fairness, responsibility and respect for others.
A structured class debate—‘AI should replace teachers in the classroom to enhance and improve educational outcomes’—forms the centrepiece of the lesson. The video models how to support children in exploring this topic from multiple perspectives, helping them consider the wider implications of AI in real-life situations.
Teachers are guided to set clear debate rules, manage discussion time fairly, moderate actively and encourage thoughtful, evidence-based contributions. Asking clarifying questions and prompting children to give examples helps deepen understanding and build confidence in expressing ideas respectfully.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Exploring AI unit. It equips teachers with practical strategies to support ethical thinking in Computing, while developing pupils’ reasoning, communication and awareness of the social impact of technology.
