Planning your animation story
This Computing video supports teachers in introducing the concept of storyboarding as part of the animation process. Children explore how professional animators, like those behind Wallace and Gromit, rely on careful planning to bring stories to life. The lesson develops computational thinking by encouraging decomposition and abstraction, helping children simplify their ideas into manageable scenes. Pupils are guided to focus on a single character, plan their scene using a storyboard, and think practically about model-making and set design. They are reminded that even a simple blob can make an effective character, and that sets should be easy to manage to avoid accidental movement.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work – videos. It helps build teachers’ subject knowledge and prepares them to support pupils in the early stages of animation planning. The video emphasises the value of simplicity, teamwork, and visual storytelling, paving the way for upcoming lessons where children begin animating and assigning production roles. It lays the groundwork for a collaborative, creative project that will culminate in a class viewing and reflection on their animation journey.
