Creating still life compositions

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to the first lesson in a still life topic, where Key stage 2 pupils create compositions from objects that are personal and meaningful to them. The focus is on selection and arrangement rather than detailed drawing, encouraging pupils to consider balance, overlap, and visibility of each item. The video demonstrates each step, from choosing objects and arranging them artistically to sketching practice lines, refining shapes, and producing a final drawing on card as the first panel of their memory box.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS2 Art and design resources. It provides clear guidance to help teachers support pupils in developing observational skills, exploring composition, and reflecting personal meaning in their work, laying the foundation for the creative outcomes
