Composing gumboots body percussion rhythms

This Music video introduces teachers to the final lesson of the South Africa unit, where pupils compose and perform body percussion rhythms to enhance their gumboot dance. It demonstrates how to model and check rhythmic patterns, guide pupils in creating eight-beat phrases, and explore dynamics by alternating between loud and soft playing. The video shows how to combine these rhythms with the song ‘Put on Your Gumboots’ alongside the existing ostinati and lead parts.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It supports teachers in bringing together singing, rhythmic and harmonic ostinati, improvisation, and notation skills into a celebratory final performance. The lesson also introduces dynamics in a practical context, providing pupils with a chance to consolidate their knowledge of South African music before moving on to the next topic, Caribbean calypso.
