Comparing the past and present
In this History video, teachers are introduced to the skills needed to help pupils identify similarities and differences in history.
The video shows how to compare sources, objects and periods of time, moving beyond general assumptions to make meaningful comparisons. Teachers observe how activities can be scaffolded from simple spot-the-difference tasks and grids in Key stage 1 to more complex comparisons of multiple sources and perspectives in Key stage 2. Practical strategies support the children in comparing past and present, recognising change and continuity, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. The video ensures teachers feel confident in guiding the children to develop analytical and historical thinking skills.
This teacher video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills videos, designed to build teachers’ confidence and skills in supporting the children to compare, analyse and draw conclusions about the past.
