Understanding AI prompts and responses
This Computing scheme of work video introduces teachers to interacting with Artificial Intelligence through prompts and responses. It supports teachers in understanding how AI systems work and how pupils can communicate with them effectively.
The video explains that a prompt is a question or command given to an AI, and a response is the reply or action generated based on the prompt. It demonstrates how AI processes prompts using data and algorithms, then responds with information or suggestions.
Examples are shown using simple and broad prompts—such as planning a school holiday trip—followed by refined prompts to show how more detailed input leads to more helpful, tailored responses. This encourages pupils to experiment with wording, context and clarity in their own prompts.
Teachers are guided to support children in practising and refining prompts, helping them to get better results from AI systems and deepening their understanding of how AI interprets human input.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Exploring AI unit. It equips teachers to lead interactive, hands-on lessons where pupils build confidence in working with AI and develop communication and critical thinking skills along the way.
