Teaching spreading techniques
This Design and technology scheme of work video supports teachers in understanding the progression of spreading skills in primary cooking lessons. It explains how to help the children use age-appropriate tools to spread ingredients safely and effectively. The video outlines early techniques in Key stage 1, such as using spoons for soft ingredients. It builds towards more refined methods in KS2, including the use of spatulas and butter knives for glazing and icing. Teachers are shown how to model safe tool use, encourage control and promote even application.
This video is part of our Cooking and nutrition resources. It simplifies food preparation techniques and tool use, helping teachers feel confident and prepared to support the children in developing spreading skills in the lessons and unit below.
