Investigating feelings about the playground
In this Geography video, teachers are guided through a Year 1 fieldwork lesson in which pupils explore their feelings about different areas of the playground. Using an enquiry-based approach, the video explains how children can gather data through visual responses and simple questionnaires to reflect on how the environment meets their needs.
Teachers are supported in setting up the enquiry, identifying three key playground features with the class, and modelling how to record pupils’ feelings using happy or sad face sticky notes. The lesson is followed by a classroom discussion and simple questionnaire activity to help pupils consider why they do or do not enjoy certain areas. Photographs and a playground map support analysis and help pupils visualise peers’ responses. This lesson lays the foundations for data collection and prepares pupils for a follow-up session where they propose improvements.
This lesson is part of the Geography fieldwork and mapping videos, which support progression in spatial thinking, geographical vocabulary and collaborative fieldwork planning.
