Making a simple pot

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to the score and slip method for joining clay, as they create and decorate a simple pinch pot.

The lesson begins with a look at the work of ceramic artist Ran Thi Bam, who explores human nature through organic clay forms. Her imaginative use of decoration and clay joining will inspire the children’s own pots.

Teachers will then demonstrate how to make a pinch pot. Pupils begin by rolling clay into a ball and pressing their thumb into the centre. Using thumb and fingers, they gently pinch and shape the clay, working upwards to form the pot. The video shows how to keep the rim thick to maintain strength and reminds children it may take a few tries to get right.

Once the pot is formed, pupils will decorate it using the score and slip technique. They’ll learn how to scratch the clay surface, brush on a mixture of clay and water, and press the pieces together securely.
