Creating montage animations

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to the technique of photo montage, first pioneered by German artist Hannah Höch over a century ago. It explores how Key stage 2 pupils can rearrange existing images to create new compositions and record their creative process step by step. The video demonstrates each stage, from collecting magazine cuttings and experimenting with layouts to photographing the montage in stages, capturing its development from blank page to finished piece, and using these images to create a mini animation.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS2 Art and design resources. It provides clear guidance to help teachers support pupils in experimenting with composition, sequence, and storytelling, while encouraging creativity and offering opportunities to extend the work into animation or further art forms.
