Exploring the past using oral histories
This History video supports teachers in delivering a reflective and immersive lesson introducing Year 6 pupils to oral history. It explains how personal stories and recorded memories contribute to our understanding of the past, especially for events and people often absent from written records. The pupils explore the power of listening and analysing not just what is said but how it is communicated through voice and body language.
Teachers are guided in helping the children question sources critically, compare oral accounts with other types of evidence and consider the interviewer’s role in shaping a narrative. The video also offers support for setting up simple oral history projects and discussions that build historical enquiry skills while developing empathy and personal connections with the past.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History interview videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children explore the past and understand how it has shaped the world today.
