The seven nutrients
This Science video introduces pupils to the seven nutrient groups essential for human survival and growth. It explains how carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils, vitamins, minerals, fibre, and water each play a vital role in keeping our bodies healthy and functioning. The video uses clear examples, from energy-providing carbohydrates in bread and pasta to calcium in dairy for strong bones, and highlights the importance of a balanced diet to meet these needs. Pupils will also learn about deficiency diseases such as anaemia and scurvy, and how energy requirements change with age, size, and activity levels.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Science – Diet. It supports teachers in helping pupils recognise the difference between nutrient groups and food groups, understand the sources and functions of each nutrient, and explore how lifestyle choices affect dietary needs. By linking scientific knowledge to everyday food choices, it encourages pupils to make informed decisions that contribute to long-term health.
