Animal mash-up writing

This French video introduces teachers to a creative sentence-building activity inspired by Spike Milligan’s playful poetry. Pupils combine animal nouns and body parts to invent fantastical creatures, applying prior learning on gender, liaison, and sentence structure. The lesson scaffolds the process step by step – from selecting and mashing nouns, determining gender, and using “it has” correctly, to building a short, stylish paragraph that avoids repetition through connectives and list punctuation.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s French scheme – vocabulary.  It demonstrates how to consolidate familiar vocabulary while offering scope for extension. The activity can be completed in a single 45-minute session or developed into a longer cross-curricular project, linking with art, computing, and science. More confident pupils can expand their descriptions with adjectives and additional body parts, supporting both creativity and grammatical accuracy.
