Planning a fieldwork route
This Geography scheme of work video helps teachers support pupils in planning a safe and purposeful route for conducting their fieldwork inquiry. The location of the route will depend on the class’s chosen inquiry question, which could take them to a park, a local high street, or the area around school.
Pupils will draw their planned route on an Ordnance Survey map, marking key data collection points and considering how different environments suit different methods—for example, measuring traffic near roads or conducting surveys in pedestrian-heavy zones.
The video also explores how pupils can assess potential risks and plan appropriate mitigations. Examples include not handling litter or vegetation directly, dressing appropriately for weather conditions, and staying within range of adult supervision.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork Teacher video collection. It empowers teachers to confidently guide pupils in organising and navigating local fieldwork experiences safely and effectively.
