Plant-based materials in action

This Science scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Key Stage 1 pupils apply their understanding of materials, plants, and habitats in a sustainable context through the Making connections – Plant-based materials unit. Pupils begin by revising the uses of everyday materials, identifying plant-based versus human-made substances, and exploring the papermaking process. They then conduct a series of inquiries to test the suitability of different materials for making eco-friendly plant pots, drawing on prior knowledge to evaluate strength, flexibility, water resistance, and environmental impact.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Science Making connections resources. It simplifies the process, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to support pupils in linking scientific knowledge across topics through hands-on investigations. With opportunities to observe, test, and evaluate real-world materials, the unit promotes sustainability, reinforces enquiry skills, and encourages children to make informed, environmentally conscious decisions in lessons like the ones below.
