Tips for making and finishing pneumatic toys

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Year 3 pupils make and finish their pneumatic toys. It provides step-by-step guidance for assembling working pneumatic mechanisms using balloons, syringes or tubing.

The video models different construction techniques, including creating airtight seals, using recycled materials to reinforce structures and incorporating linkages. Teachers are shown how to support practical making skills alongside key Design and technology knowledge, such as pivots, stable structures and the evaluation of mechanisms.

Extension suggestions offer challenge through material restrictions and more complex mechanisms, helping the children to test, refine and decorate their toy designs with creativity and resilience.
