Introducing macro photography

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces photography as an art form, guiding pupils to create abstract close-up images from natural forms. Influenced by the work of photographer Edward Weston, children explore fruit and vegetables as their subject matter, learning to see line, shape, texture and form in everyday objects. They’ll be encouraged to observe carefully, make decisions and justify their artistic choices.

The video outlines how to set up each shot, including tips for choosing objects with interesting structure, selecting backgrounds and making the most of available lighting. Pupils experiment with camera angles and composition to produce abstract images. Pupils will take a series of photographs and explore editing techniques.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Photo opportunity unit. It supports pupils in developing observational skills, creative decision-making and digital editing techniques — while introducing them to photography as a form of artistic expression.
