Exploring drawing materials

In this Art and design scheme of work video a range of drawing materials and techniques are introduced. These build on previous knowledge from Year 1 and helping children develop confidence in using art vocabulary and skills.

This unit begins to connect pupils’ existing artistic knowledge with specific vocabulary, helping children talk more confidently about their work, and provide children with new techniques to use. Pupils will explore a range of drawing tools and experiment with how to hold and use them. They’ll learn about the properties of materials, and try making different types of marks.

Teachers are encouraged to practice using the same materials ahead of the lesson, so they can more confidently model techniques to the class when modelling to the class.

Children are challenged to find four different ways of using drawing tools. The task is open-ended but the video provides a range of practical prompts.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 2 Understanding tone and texture unit.
