Helping pupils recognise and use symbols in geography
This Geography scheme of work teacher video supports the teaching of a Key Stage 1 lesson on symbols and map keys. It outlines how children begin by identifying familiar real-world symbols — such as those for recycling, power or locking — before learning how symbols are used to represent features on a map. The lesson builds on previous learning around aerial photographs, local features and maps. It introduces pupils to the idea that symbols are simple, recognisable icons that help us understand the location and purpose of features. Children then create and apply their own symbols to a fictional village map.
To scaffold learning, teachers are encouraged to ask questions about what a place is used for, helping pupils match symbols to purpose — for example, using a book to represent a library rather than drawing the building itself. Suggested symbols are provided to support those who need help developing ideas.
The session also introduces route-tracing, as pupils use their finger to follow a path for the character across their map, then draw it in. This supports the KS1 attainment target of describing routes and recognising features and landmarks.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Mapping and fieldwork resources, giving teachers the tools to deliver hands-on, imaginative mapping experiences for younger learners.
