Making sense of sources

In this History video, teachers are supported in helping the children make historical deductions using visual and written sources.

The lesson focuses on developing an understanding of primary and secondary sources by analysing different interpretations of the historical figure Boudicca. The video demonstrates how to guide the children in evaluating sources by considering bias, purpose and historical context. It models how to introduce the Victorian statue of Boudicca, prompting discussion about its accuracy and links to Victorian values. Teachers are encouraged to explore how images and written accounts, such as Cassius Dio’s Roman text, influence how Boudicca is portrayed. The children then use inference to record her traits and create their own interpretations.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History skills videos, helping pupils develop key enquiry and interpretation skills.
