Exploring letters with the body
This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a lesson on the human form, where Key stage 1 pupils work collaboratively to create a human alphabet. It encourages teamwork and creativity as children use their bodies to form letter shapes, experimenting with silhouettes, floor-based poses, and wall-supported positions. The video demonstrates each stage, from organising groups and assigning photographers to capturing inventive letter shapes and combining pupils for trickier letters, resulting in a photographic record of body sculptures as an expressive alphabet.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS1 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to explore the human form in a playful and imaginative way, developing spatial awareness, collaboration, and creativity while producing unique photographic outcomes.
