Making clay house tiles

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils as they turn their house designs into clay tiles, using the skills they’ve developed for shaping, pressing and joining clay.

Children will begin by revisiting their house drawings and discussing, as a class, what steps and equipment are needed to bring their ideas to life. Once the workspace is set up, children roll out the clay and use a card template to cut their tile shape. They’ll then begin adding features from their house designs. The video reminds pupils how to use tools to add detail and texture, and how to use the score and slip technique for joining clay securely.

They are encouraged to make decisions as they work, using their designs as a starting point but adapting as needed, just like real artists and designers do. This project is inspired by the work of sculptor Rachel Whiteread and gives children a chance to explore structure, texture and 3D form.
