Exploring Picasso’s Guernica

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to the first lesson in a two-part study of Picasso’s Guernica. It explores how Key stage 2 pupils can respond to historical or world events through symbolism and abstract composition, rather than literal depictions of war. The video demonstrates each step, from researching and sketching ideas in sketchbooks to selecting meaningful symbols, planning compositions with contrast and balance, and critiquing work before moving on to paint in the following lesson.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS2 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to explore symbolism, history, and abstraction, encouraging thoughtful reflection and planning as they prepare their Guernica-inspired pieces.
