Introducing the world’s oceans

This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in introducing pupils to the five oceans of the world, their locations and key facts that distinguish them. The video also addresses common misconceptions and helps teachers build clear, accurate geographical understanding for younger pupils.

It explains that oceans are vast bodies of saltwater covering around 70% of the Earth’s surface and locates the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic Oceans. Teachers are guided in differentiating oceans from seas, using examples such as Hudson Bay and the Dead Sea and addressing misunderstandings, such as the idea of “two Pacific Oceans.” The video also highlights the Pacific as the largest and deepest ocean, spanning Asia, Oceania and the Americas and home to the Challenger Deep.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography locational knowledge resources and supports teachers in developing pupils’ global locational knowledge and map skills.
