Exploring seasonal change with journey sticks
This Geography scheme of work video introduces teachers to an engaging outdoor learning activity where pupils explore their environment using journey sticks. The lesson encourages observational skills, creativity, and communication as pupils follow a guided route and collect natural objects that represent seasonal changes.
You’ll be guided through how to prepare and model the activity: from selecting appropriately sized sticks to demonstrating how to attach string and secure found items like leaves, blossoms, or feathers. The video also offers tips for ensuring safety and maximising discussion opportunities back in class.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork skills videos. It builds teachers’ confidence in delivering practical fieldwork while encouraging pupils to notice and reflect on their local environment.
