Exploring seasonal change with journey sticks

In this Geography video, teachers are introduced to an engaging outdoor learning activity where the children explore their environment using journey sticks. The lesson develops observational skills, creativity, and communication as the children follow a guided route and collect natural objects that reflect seasonal changes.

The video shows how to prepare and model the activity, from selecting appropriately sized sticks to demonstrating how to attach string and secure found items such as leaves, blossoms, or feathers. Practical tips for safety and maximising discussion opportunities back in class are included.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography fieldwork videos. It builds teachers’ confidence in delivering practical fieldwork while encouraging pupils to notice and reflect on their local environment.
