Teaching map reading
In this Geography video, teachers are supported in confidently delivering lessons on grid references, including how to find specific locations using both four-figure and six-figure techniques. It clearly explains the differences between general map grids and the Ordnance Survey (OS) National Grid System, which the children are required to use by the end of Key stage 2.
The video demonstrates the ‘along the corridor and up the stairs’ method to help the children find locations using coordinates. Teachers are shown how to explain grid square references, such as 1998, as well as more precise six-digit references, such as 193986, including how to visualise subdividing a grid into tenths. It also introduces key elements of the OS map system, including 100km grid squares labelled with two letters.
Teachers are equipped to help the children interpret and apply these skills confidently during geography fieldwork and map reading. This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Map skills and fieldwork CPD collection and ensures teachers are ready to deliver essential map-reading skills in line with the national curriculum.
