Choosing fieldwork methods

This Geography scheme of work video helps teachers guide pupils in choosing the most suitable data collection methods for their fieldwork inquiry. Building on their selected inquiry question from the previous lesson, pupils will consider what data they need to gather and which techniques will help them answer their question most effectively.

The video explores how pupils can evaluate different perspectives, such as the opinions of local residents, shopkeepers, commuters or tourists, and encourages them to think critically about who their data sources should be. Teachers are also guided on how to help pupils design their own data collection templates and ensure that any sensitive or inappropriate questions are reviewed and adjusted before fieldwork begins. There is advice on supervising public-facing data collection and organising resources such as devices for audio or photographic recording.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork Teacher video collection. It supports teachers to develop confident, inquiry-based learning experiences that connect pupils with real-world issues in their local area.
