Introducing the seven continents and their key features
This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in introducing the concept of continents—large landmasses that divide the Earth’s surface.
Teachers are guided through how to explain that there are seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Oceania, listed in order from largest to smallest. The video also clarifies that continents include associated islands—for example, Japan belongs to Asia and the Caribbean islands to North America. Teachers are also supported in reinforcing the idea that continents are made up of multiple countries, helping pupils grasp the scale and structure of the world map
It lays the foundation for future locational knowledge and map work, helping pupils develop early geographical awareness.
