Exploring fibre arts

This Art and design scheme of work video supports a Craft and design unit where pupils explore simple fibre art techniques through hands-on activities.

Children try skills such as wool wrapping, plaiting, threading, knotting and weaving. These techniques are brought together in a final artwork, where pupils attach their individual pieces onto looms. The video introduces artists Judith Scott and Cecilia Vicuña, who both use found materials in their textile work. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on the blurred lines between art and craft and how these artists use textiles to share ideas about care, sustainability and expression.

Each lesson focuses on a fibre art skill, with an emphasis on experimentation. Teachers will decide on a suitable final outcome for their class. Children might use individual box looms, work in pairs or groups, or contribute to a large shared loom made from creative alternatives like a hula hoop.
