Introducing place, culture and contrast in early geography
This Geography scheme of work teacher video provides an overview of the Around the World unit, outlining how the content supports Development Matters and helps children begin to make sense of the world around them. It explains how the unit fosters early geographical thinking through hands-on, play-based learning.
The video highlights how this unit supports the statements around recognising similarities and differences between life in the UK and in other countries. Pupils begin to understand that landscapes, weather and ways of living may differ from their own experiences, both within the UK and globally. These ideas are introduced through engaging activities that draw on stories, images, small world play and personal experiences. You’ll also hear guidance on how to make the most of the activities — from introducing new vocabulary and modelling tasks, to encouraging pupils to independently explore and adapt their learning. The unit supports the Characteristics of Effective Learning, particularly playing and exploring and creating and thinking critically.
This unit provides strong foundations for Year 1 geography by developing early locational and place knowledge, and supporting children’s understanding of key geographical concepts such as place, space, scale, and cultural awareness.
