Introducing place, culture and contrast in early geography

In this Geography video, teachers are supported in delivering the Around the world unit, which introduces early geographical thinking through hands-on, play-based learning. The video outlines how the unit aligns with Development Matters and helps the children begin making sense of the world around them.

The video explains how the activities develop understanding of similarities and differences between life in the UK and other countries, encouraging curiosity about diverse landscapes, climates and ways of living. Teachers are guided in using stories, images, small world play and personal experiences to explore these ideas. It also models how to introduce new vocabulary, support independent exploration and link learning to the Characteristics of Effective Learning, particularly playing and exploring and creating and thinking critically.

This video is part of our Geography EYFS videos, which provide strong foundations for Year 1 Geography by developing early locational and place knowledge. They als support understanding of key geographical concepts such as place, space, scale and cultural awareness.
