Understanding the physical geography, climate and human activity in the Alps
This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in introducing the Alps by exploring its formation, climate, land use, and environmental challenges. The video gives a comprehensive overview of both physical and human geography, with clear explanations and examples to support pupil understanding.
Teachers are guided in explaining that the Alps span eight countries, including France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria, and consist of fold mountains formed when tectonic plates collided. Key peaks such as Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, and Mont Dom are introduced as some of the highest in Europe.
The video breaks down how the climate varies with altitude, and teachers are supported in discussing the impact of climate change, including melting glaciers, rising temperatures, and their effects on plant species, soil stability, and landslide risks. The video also explores vegetation zones, from coniferous forests to alpine tundra, and introduces animals such as the ibex, marmots, and wild boar, which have adapted to high-altitude life.
Human settlement and economic activity are also covered: from traditional farming and woodwork to the rise of tourism, now the region’s primary source of income.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Climate teacher videos collection, and supports pupils in developing a deeper understanding of Europe’s geography, natural processes, and human-environment interaction.
