Investigating shadows and reflection

This Science scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Year 3 pupils investigate light and shadows through hands-on exploration and structured scientific enquiry. Pupils observe how different materials affect shadow formation, test the impact of light source distance, and use UV-reactive materials to understand how sunlight can cause damage. The video also demonstrates how to guide children in comparing results, analysing patterns, and using data logging to explore reflections.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Science Working scientifically resources. It simplifies the process, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to support pupils in exploring key concepts from the Year 3 Light programme of study. With engaging investigations, practical modelling, and opportunities to develop fair testing skills, the unit encourages thoughtful questioning and evidence-based conclusions in lesson below.
