Understanding Egyptian beliefs

This History video introduces teachers to the key substantive concept of belief systems across cultures and time, using ancient Egypt as a focused example. It explores how the Egyptian religion, practised for over three thousand years, was polytheistic and deeply woven into daily life. The video outlines the roles of major deities such as Thoth, god of writing, and Horus, god of war and the sky, and explains how gods were anthropomorphic – combining human and animal traits.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History scheme – Egypt. It supports teachers in introducing pupils to the diversity of worldviews in the past and how they shaped society, leadership, and culture. Through examples like temple offerings, religious festivals, and the divine status of pharaohs, teachers will feel prepared to guide pupils in understanding the significance of belief in ancient Egypt and to make comparisons with belief systems across other times and places.
