Introducing Early Mapping Skills

In this Geography video, teachers are supported in introducing early mapping skills to Key stage 1 pupils, focusing on devising simple maps and using basic symbols in a key. The video shows how pupils can connect symbols to real-life features by navigating existing maps before creating their own.

It models how pupils can build confidence by mapping familiar spaces, starting with the classroom and expanding to the school grounds. Teachers are guided in modelling directional vocabulary and introducing key concepts such as orientation and compass points. Collaborative activities, large-scale group maps and agreed class symbols support accuracy and understanding.

This lesson is part of the Geography fieldwork and mapping videos, which support progression in spatial thinking, geographical vocabulary and collaborative fieldwork planning.
