Introducing Early Mapping Skills
This Geography scheme of work video explores how to introduce early mapping skills to Key Stage 1 pupils, focusing on how to devise simple maps and use and construct basic symbols in a key. Before pupils begin creating maps, they are supported in navigating existing ones, helping them connect symbols and real-life features.
The video models how pupils can build confidence by mapping familiar spaces, starting with the classroom and expanding to the school grounds. Teachers are encouraged to model the use of directional vocabulary and introduce key concepts such as orientation and compass points. Collaborative activities, large-scale group maps and agreed class symbols support pupils in building accuracy and understanding.
Teachers are shown how to guide pupils to position features relative to one another, begin using symbols in place of words, and develop spatial awareness through observation, sketching, and discussion. This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork resources and supports teachers in teaching early skills that form the foundation for later geographical enquiry and mapping
