Exploring ancient Egyptian art
This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a lesson where pupils will design a scroll inspired by ancient Egyptian art, using their growing understanding of this art to tell a story or share a message.
Pupils begin by exploring original Egyptian drawings and paintings to understand how art can teach us about people, beliefs and places. They also learn that papyrus was a plant used by the ancient Egyptians to make early forms of paper. The class is then given a design brief, for example, to tell a personal story or share something about their school. Working in sketchbooks, children develop their ideas through drawing and thumbnail sketches, experimenting with images, colours and patterns. The video encourages pupils to explore freely, trying out materials, layering ideas, and thinking carefully about layout and composition. Sketchbooks are treated as a creative space where experimentation is encouraged.
By the end of the lesson, pupils will have explored different ideas and developed a clear plan for the scroll they’ll create in the next two lessons. The video ends with a peer discussion activity to reflect on each other’s designs and the messages behind them.
