Designing a clay tile

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils as they plan a house-themed clay tile, ready to make in the next lesson.

The lesson will begin with a class discussion, where pupils will consider how key features of a house could be made in clay. After exploring the work of sculptor Rachel Whiteread, children will use their sketchbooks to design a tile that includes both relief elements and impressed details pressed into the clay. Children create their own house designs in their sketchbooks, using either one of the house images or their imagination. They’ll label which parts will be joined and which will be pressed, thinking carefully about tools and techniques. Once their designs are complete, pupils will swap sketchbooks and give feedback to a partner. This reflection time helps children refine their ideas before moving on to clay work.
