Developing ideas

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in revisiting and developing their collage work, adding new layers and details to enhance their original pieces.

This lesson introduces the concept of refining their ideas over time, guiding children to return to a collage and consider what else they could add.

The video begins by showing a finished collage that has been developed further using paint and pastel. Pupils are encouraged to experiment with techniques before adding anything to their final work as testing ideas on scraps of painted paper helps build confidence. If the work is collaborative, children are reminded to listen to and support one another. Techniques demonstrated include sponge painting with contrasting colours, adding drawn lines or patterns, applying tissue shapes, or using pastels to highlight areas. If pupils have recreated natural textures, magnifying glasses and sketchbooks can offer inspiration for fine detail.

The video also suggests photographing the collage before and after development to show the changes made.
