The BBRAS computational thinking challenge

This Computing video supports teachers in delivering a lesson using the BBRAS challenge—an engaging mix of unplugged and digital activities designed to develop computational thinking. Pupils begin by solving printed cards in groups and reflecting on the computational thinking skills used, such as pattern recognition or decomposition. The cards vary in difficulty, encouraging both accessible entry points and stretch opportunities for all learners. Challenges progress from simple matching tasks to more complex puzzles, such as decoding Morse code. Pupils then take part in the online BBRAS test in pairs, discussing their answers and applying logical reasoning.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work – videos. It equips teachers with the knowledge to differentiate effectively, support pair-based problem solving, and promote reflective discussion around mistakes and misconceptions. The challenge introduces an element of competition and national participation, offering further motivation. Teachers are encouraged to register their school with BBRAS to access certificates and extended opportunities for their pupils.
