Bright bulbs, busy circuits

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. In this lesson, pupils investigate how the number of bulbs in a circuit affects their brightness. Using hands-on models like a rotating rope loop to represent electrical current, they explore the concept of resistance and how it increases with more components. Through a comparative test, pupils learn to keep variables the same while observing and recording how added bulbs lead to dimmer light due to reduced current. They develop their scientific explanation skills, using data to support conclusions and explain how resistance limits energy transfer. An extension with ammeters, motors or buzzers deepens understanding of current flow.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, key stage 2, Year 6, Energy: Circuits, batteries and switches, Lesson 3: Current and resistance
