Creating mixed media self-portraits

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces how pupils can explore ideas for mixed media self-portraits, using their photo portraits as a creative starting point.

The video explains that mixed media simply means using more than one material. Pupils experiment with different combinations in their sketchbooks, recording ideas and building confidence. They’re encouraged to think carefully about composition, materials and the message they want their portrait to communicate.

The focus is on developing ideas rather than creating a finished piece. Children are supported to reflect on what works well, adapt their thinking and describe how they’ve achieved particular effects.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Portraits unit. It gives pupils the opportunity to develop thoughtful and creative responses.
