Developing algorithms and debugging

This teacher video outlines how children build on their Year 1 learning by using more precise computing vocabulary. They move from describing instructions to understanding algorithms as sets of commands that control a computer or robot. They are also introduced to the term bugs instead of errors.

The video explains that debugging is the process of finding and fixing bugs. Learners are shown that algorithms must be in the correct sequence, include all necessary steps and be clear enough for a computer to follow.

Across the unit, children create and debug algorithms through both unplugged and on screen activities. They also use two coding platforms to design their own algorithms, developing confidence in writing and testing simple programs.
