Understanding the use of AI to generate code

This Computing scheme of work video introduces teachers to how Artificial Intelligence can support code generation and assist in planning digital projects. It highlights the ways AI can offer structure, inspiration and guidance—particularly when teaching HTML or block-based coding like Scratch.

The video demonstrates how AI can provide a starting point for writing code, such as generating a basic HTML structure for a website. It explains that these responses are based on patterns AI has learned and often come with simple explanations, making them accessible even to those new to coding.

It also explores how refining prompts can improve the quality and relevance of the code produced. The same process is shown with block coding, where AI can help generate Scratch project ideas, instructions and snippets of code to support teaching and learning.

Teachers are encouraged to view AI as a support tool—useful for saving time and guiding project development—while recognising that creativity, problem-solving and adapting code for purpose still require human understanding.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Exploring AI unit. It gives teachers the confidence to explore AI-generated code in the classroom and supports the development of pupils’ coding skills through guided experimentation and critical thinking.
