Taking a line for a walk

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a drawing activity inspired by Paul Klee’s idea of “taking a line for a walk.” It encourages Key stage 2 pupils to extend lines, shapes, and textures from selected objects into creative tonal drawings, building on skills in pattern, tone, and observation. The video demonstrates each step, from working with black-and-white copies of textured materials to extending lines with pencil, applying tonal shading, and reflecting on how closely drawings match the original objects.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS2 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to explore line, tone, and texture while making links with literacy, as children describe what they see and develop technical ways of replicating it in lessons like the ones below.
