Understanding staff notation basics

This Music video introduces teachers to the fundamentals of staff notation and how it is laid out for classroom teaching. It explains how pitch is shown using the five-line stave, with notes placed either on the lines or in the spaces, and how clefs extend the range of notes to cover both higher and lower pitches. Teachers are guided through the use of treble and bass clefs, bar lines, and time signatures, giving them the confidence to explain these structures clearly to pupils.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It ensures that teachers feel equipped to explain staff notation as required in the national curriculum. It also highlights practical shortcuts such as repeat marks and provides links to related teacher skills videos on pitch, clef, and time signatures, building teacher knowledge step by step.
