Grammar for nouns in Spanish
This Spanish video introduces teachers to the grammatical concept of noun gender and rules for forming plural nouns in Spanish.
Every noun is masculine or feminine, a property of the word not the object. Typical endings are -o for masculine nouns and -a for feminine nouns, although there are exceptions. The video recommends using a bilingual dictionary to confirm gender. The indefinite article, un or una must agree with the gender of the noun. This is unlike English, where articles ‘a’ or ‘an’ are used, selected according to the first letter of the noun rather than gender.
Rules for forming plural nouns are presented clearly: add -s after a vowel and -es after a consonant. When counting, the indefinite article, is replaced with a number, in the same way as ‘a banana’ becomes ‘two bananas’ in English. These foundations support phrase building and prepare for the grammatical concept of adjectival agreement.
