Recognising and pronouncing the letter ‘i’ in Spanish

This Spanish scheme of work video helps pupils identify and pronounce the Spanish ‘i’ sound, which is similar to the long ‘e’ sound in English. The video explains that, unlike in English, Spanish vowels rarely double and the ‘i’ sound can also be represented by the letter ‘y’ when it stands alone, as in the word y (meaning and).

Using fun examples such as Javi, Sofia and Christina, the video builds familiarity with the ‘i’ sound in names and common words. The children are guided through mouth mechanics and encouraged to show their teeth and use a “big cheesy grin” to practise clear pronunciation. This video supports the children in developing early phonics skills and confidence when speaking in Spanish.
